Warangal Pays Tribute to Ande Sri, the Poet Behind Telangana Anthem

WARANGAL: The people of Telangana are mourning the loss of Ande Sri, the famous poet and lyricist who wrote the state anthem ‘Jaya Jayahe Telangana Janani Janakethanam’. He passed away on Monday morning after suffering a heart attack at his home in Hyderabad.

Born as Ande Yellaiah in Rebarthi village of Siddipet district (which was once part of the old Warangal district), Ande Sri became one of the most powerful voices of the Telangana statehood movement. His songs and speeches inspired thousands of students, artists, and activists across the region.

Friends and fellow artists from Warangal recalled how his emotional poetry became the heartbeat of the Telangana struggle. Many remembered him not just as a poet, but as a symbol of pride and identity for the people of the region.

Prof. Kurapati Venkat Narayana, who worked closely with him during the movement, said Ande Sri’s death is a great loss to Telangana’s literary world.

“He used to say that people should not be divided by religion or caste. His songs awakened people’s minds and filled them with energy,” Venkat Narayana shared.

  1. Sudhakar, a research scholar from Kakatiya University, remembered how Ande Sri’s words motivated students during the famous Poli Keka event. His songs gave courage and unity to young people during those historic days.

Local folk artist N. Charan said that ‘Jaya Jayahe Telangana’ was more than just a song — it became a symbol of hope for every Telangana citizen.

“His spontaneous poetry and powerful performances made him a true cultural icon. His songs reflected the real struggles of the people and will always stay in our hearts,” he said.

Ande Sri’s legacy continues to live on through his words — a reminder of the dream, spirit, and pride of Telangana.
